2017 Civic Type R

The 2017 Honda Civic Type-R is the FWD King

As many of you may have heard, the new Honda Civic Type-R has set a new lap record for FWD cars around the famous Green Hell. Yes, that’s right, the Civic Type-R has lapped the Nürburgring in 7 minutes and 43 seconds (and 80 milliseconds), demolishing its own previous record by almost 7 seconds and outperforming its hot hatch rival, the VW Golf GTI Clubsport S, by 3 seconds. The new Type-R is also faster around the Nürburgring than the original Pagani Zonda S, a car that cost half a million dollars when it was released whereas the 2017 Civic Type-R is expected to be priced in the mid $30,000 range. It’s no surprise that the Civic Type-R is incredibly fast, but how did it manage to shave off nearly 7 seconds from only a 10HP gain from its previous model?

Performance Details

Well it’s a little more complicated than that because 10HP isn’t all that the new Type-R has received. The 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four now makes 306H HP (10HP more than the previous model) and 295 lb ft of torque and is only offered with a 6-speed manual transmission, the only way it should be. The new Type-R has a longer wheelbase and wider tires (10mm wider all around) and a completely new independent multilink suspension setup ditching the older torsion beam setup. Honda has also made the new Type-R’s body stiffer and refined the aggressive looking aero.

The Controversy

However, this news does come with a bit of controversy and critique. The Civic that performed the blisteringly hot lap had Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and a roll cage installed. Honda has addressed the that the roll cage was fitted for safety reasons and the addition of weight was compensated for by removing the rear seats and the Infotainment system. Honda has not mentioned anything about the tires leading many people to speculate that they might be optional extras once the car is available for sale.

The Civic Type-R is finally en-route to North America

This is all great for Honda lovers everywhere, especially those in North America, as for the first time, 2017 Honda Civic Type-R will be available for purchase to customers in North America. Thus, we are no longer limited to just the Civic Si, and on all accounts, the new Type-R seems like a winner to us. With menacingly aggressive aero that makes the car look ready to devour everything on the road, and performance levels to match, the 2017 Honda Civic Type-R is the FWD King.

For now.
